Back in the Saddle

This was my first week back in the clinic and hospital since my enforced break between work permits. Even with working this weekend and being busy already, it is good to be back! I’ve really missed teaching, seeing familiar patients in the clinic, and the variety of what we see in the hospital.

One of my favorite conversations being back in clinic this week was seeing an older man I met back in March (when I could barely say anything in Swahili). Meeting him this week, I greeted him and he responded, ‘Daktari! You are here! Do you understand all Swahili now?’ I laughed and told him still not a lot, but I am still trying. He shook his head and said, ‘I don’t understand any English, so. . . ‘ It was fun to see that we could communicate a lot more than before, and as a Family doctor I always love having relationships with patients over time.

I’m so thankful that I have great learners and coworkers here, and that I can be useful again. Working on teaching curriculum on the couch is not the same!

Ryan and I are officially fundraising for next year, so if you would like to contribute, you can click here or see our “Ways to Support” page.
